Well -it's nearly the end of the year - and as a general rule of thumb I like to look at the photos I've taken over the year that sum up the year in general. But this isn't the case this time.

I could only pick 25 photos out of some 4000 or so photos that range in time from 2006 - 2007. None really gratify the area without you being there so I didn't put the best shots I've ever taken there (well, you'd probably steal them and use them as your own).

There's a bit of a water and sun theme going - not as much the wildlife shots this time. Though the cassowary was one of the greatest finds in the past two years. And it's a wild one as well - not locked up in a zoo somewhere. Was taken at a special location south of Cairns with my daughter and brother as witnesses.

There's even an exact view from my kitchen window. Not much of a view from a photo - but one hell of a sight when you see the magestic trees in a young and regenerating rainforest (beyond the cane).

There may be a best of 2007 picture theme going in my next post - but this one will surffice for the time being.

Have a happy and safe new  year (2008)!

Peyote the spotted python - 2 years old!

Peyote is now grown up - born on October 19 2004 - she's really a unique snake.

She's not just unique looking, as she is spectacular. But she's calm and sees things that I can only imagine! She's so in tune with her surrounds and the world around her. She's the only snake that actively searches for me when I am opening up the other snakes' enclosures. All the other snakes hide, she's at her tanks edge peering over waitng for me to open her tank. She's never hissed or struck out at me. Though, ironically she's the only snake to have bitten me twice and isn't a hatchey.

She bit me because she believed my hand was food on both occassions. But as she's a python, there's no venom or anything to worry about. Just a little blood. She seemed to realise what she had done because she let go pretty quickly.

She's eating 60g rats now (weaner sized) and has never refused a feed.

Here's a couple of pictures really showing her colours and beauty. She's over a metre in length now and I expect her to grow another 30 - 50cm probably by late next year.

Crane Crashes into Gold Coast Bridge

This is what happens when you drive a barge with a crane onboard that you forget to lower while going under low bridges on the Gold Coast (Chevron Island).

I was just down on the Gold Coast for a bit of a tiki tour. My daughter and I were going on a whale watching expidition. And as we were ready to board we saw the unusual barge carrying palm trees and the crane go past. I mean, it wasn't spectacular, sort of unusual.

Then the captain from our whale watching boat was yelling out to them... I couldn't quite understand - I thought it was "Do you have a brain???"

But - I believe it was "Lower the CRANE - LOWER THE CRANE!!!"

And Fudumph *crash* *smash* *Badash* (sound effects would help you know).

The results are below... I think they were lucky the crane wasn't a 'fixed' object - ie it was able to move so did little damage to the bridge. And above all, lucky no one was hurt.

Anyhow, I missed the impact by just a second, so there's the aftermath caught on camera with the culprits - rather hard to disguise themselves :)

Was a beautiful day whale watching - tho I should save that for another thread!
